My Kubecon NA experience!

Updated 2 min readMarkdown

Hey, everyone, how is it going?

I attended KubeCon NA in Atlanta two weeks ago, and it was a great experience! Connecting with the community and meeting co-workers was the highlight for me, as I've spent the last 11 months primarily interacting with them online.

I was supposed to arrive on 09/nov to attend the Maintainers Summit there, but with a mix of delayed flights both from Brazil and from the US, I ended up arriving only at 11 pm :( I hope to participate in it next time.

OpenTofu Day (10/nov)

My KubeCon week started with OpenTofu Day, a co-located event dedicated to the OpenTofu community. This one was special for me because I was on stage twice.

My talk: How OpenTofu Uses LSP To Power Its Text Editors Plugins

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LKE6TOErLKE

I presented how OpenTofu uses the Language Server Protocol (LSP) to bring an IDE-like experience to whatever editor you prefer: VS Code, Neovim, Emacs, and others.

The idea behind LSP is simple but powerful: instead of every editor implementing its own support for every language, there is a standard protocol between the editor (the client) and a language server. The server understands the language, and the editor just asks it questions like "what can I autocomplete here?", "where is this defined?" or "what is wrong with this file?".

For OpenTofu, that server is tofu-ls, the OpenTofu Language Server. It gives you, for your HCL files:

  • Auto-completion
  • Go-to-definition
  • Syntax highlighting
  • Real-time diagnostics

So whether you're writing modules in VS Code or in Neovim, you get the same features from the same server, and improvements land for every editor at once.

Ask The Devs

Later in the day, I joined the Ask The Devs session together with other OpenTofu maintainers, where the audience could ask us anything about the project: how it's developed, what's coming next, and how to get involved.

Wrapping up

Thanks to everyone who came to the talks, asked questions, or just stopped by to chat. See you at the next one!
